The Penultimate Set: Your Ultimate Challenge

You’re almost there. The penultimate set—the second-to-last push before the final victory or push. This is where you dig deep, push harder, and find your true strength. You’ve come so far, and now is the time to give it everything you’ve got.

When I was training under a Great Scottish Coach, one of his favorite motivations and push to get better was ‘It’s The Penultimate, push hard’. The idea was that it was the second to last set and there was reason to dig deep, you are tired, but getting through the Second to Last as one of the best sets, means your last is going to be easy to finish strong, because then it is known to be the last and there is no reason to actually take it easy.

In competition it could be the second to last quarter of a game, the second to last lap in a track race or the second to last km in a distance road race.

Why the Penultimate Set Matters

  • Test Your Limits: This set is where you find out what you’re truly capable of. It’s not just about physical strength, but mental fortitude.
  • Build Endurance: Pushing through this set builds stamina and resilience, setting you up for a powerful finish.
  • Boost Confidence: Conquering this challenge boosts your confidence and prepares you mentally for the final set.

Tips to Power Through

  1. Focus on Form: Keep your form perfect. It’s about quality, not just quantity.
  2. Stay Positive: Remind yourself how far you’ve come. Visualize success.
  3. Breathe Deeply: Use your breath to maintain rhythm and control.
  4. Channel Your Inner Strength: Think of why you started. Let that motivation drive you.
